Roberts Interview

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
When I was about 3 years old I seen a cartoon (Birdman and the Galaxy Trio) which made me feel like I was engulfed in magic. I had an older sister who did a lot of drawing then, so I guess I saw that as an outlet to express what I felt. I grabbed some crayons and never stopped pursuing that feeling of magic. Had someone around me as a kid played piano or guitar or something I'd probably had grabbed onto that as an outlet.
WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?
At a young age, I decided I wanted to be self-taught. The trick with that is one needs to keep oneself motivated. I worked with a writer once that was a "learning" experience (working with someone who without any real professional approach is very difficult). While that project didn't go anywhere, it did lead me to learn to focus on writing my own stories. Developing my own stories kept me going.
WHAT DOES YOUR WORK AIM TO SAY?
When I was developing the Timmy book, I wanted to write a story with amoral. Something that I would have like to have been taught as a kid. I'd like to develop this into a 6 or 7 book series with a life lesson theme throughout. The Arising books will be aimed at an adult audience. I'm hoping to be developing characters that people will love, hate and also love to hate. To entertain and hopefully intrigue an audience is the goal for this series. When I end it, it will be done in a way that will have limitless possible tangents of story potential. I will say that it will not be a cliffhanger, though. So, this one will hopefully inspire other artists, writers and such to write stories based on where I leave it.
WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?
Growing up I was a big Spider-man fan. Going back I loved Ross Andru, Gil Kane, Jon Romita, George Perez, John Byrne and many more.
WHERE DO YOUR IDEAS COME FROM?
My ideas come mainly from concepts. I'll have an idea for a scene or a character. As I illustrate an idea for another scene will pop into my head. Sometimes I have no idea why I draw certain things when I'm drawing them (which can be a little confusing). Then it's sort of a puzzle that I try to figure out. In figuring it out, the story begins to gel more and more. When I have enough of the story rounded out (in sketches) I start doing the layout in a sort of thumbnail format.
WHICH CURRENT ART WORLD TRENDS ARE YOU FOLLOWING?
I don't know a lot of different trends, tbh. I am a bit of a tv junkie, though. TV has become so different since the Sopranos started all those years ago. Modern tv owes a debt of gratitude to David Chase, in my opinion. It was the beginning of creating shows for a more adult audience. This art form has been becoming more and more complex and I love it.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR WORK IN 5 YEARS?
In five years, I'd like to see my work being adapted into an animated series (The Dream Traveler) and a live action series (The Arising). Maybe have "the Arising" developed into an adult animated series in Asia somewhere first, then become a live-action series in North America.
WHAT OTHER HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE?
I like to try to keep fit ( when I'm not enjoying a drink or two on occasion, lol) and love music. If I weren't an illustrator I would be a musician. Live concerts and traveling are some things I really enjoy.
